Chapter 3

3:1  And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

carnel

(See Scofield "Romans 7:14") .

3:3  For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

carnel i.e. fleshy.

3:4  For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

1 Corinthians 1:12 1 Corinthians 1:17 ; John 1:13 ; Jude 1:23 .

3:8  Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

one

Paul refutes the notion that he and Cephas and Apollos are at variance, mere theologians and rival founders of sects: they are "one." 1 Corinthians 3:22 ; 16:12 .

reward 1 Corinthians 9:17 ; Daniel 12:3 ; 1 Corinthians 3:14

3:10  According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

grace

Grace (imparted). 1 Corinthians 15:10 ; Romans 6:1 ; 2 Peter 3:18

3:14  If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

reward

God, in the N.T. Scriptures, offers to the lost, salvation, and, for the faithful service of the saved, rewards. The passages are easily distinguished by remembering that salvation is invariably spoken of as a free gift (e.g.) John 4:10 ; Romans 6:23 ; Ephesians 2:8 Ephesians 2:9 while rewards are earned by works ; Matthew 10:42 ; Luke 19:17 ; 1 Corinthians 9:24 1 Corinthians 9:25 ; 2 Timothy 4:7 2 Timothy 4:8 ; Revelation 2:10 ; 22:12 .

A further distinction is that salvation is a present possession Luke 7:50 ; John 3:36 ; 5:24 ; 6:47, while rewards are a future attainment, to be given at the coming of the Lord ; Matthew 16:27 ; 2 Timothy 4:8 ; Revelation 22:12 .

reward 1 Corinthians 9:17 ; Daniel 12:3 ; 1 Corinthians 3:14

3:15  If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

saved

(See Scofield "Romans 1:16")

3:20  And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

Marg

The Lord Jehovah. Psalms 94:11

3:22  Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;

world
