1 : 1 The word of theLordthat came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah,in the days ofJosiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.
1 : 2 I will utterly sweep away everythingfrom the face of the earth,declares theLord.
1 : 3 I will sweep awayman and beast;I will sweep away the birds of the heavensandthe fish of the sea,andthe rubblewith the wicked.I willcut off mankindfrom the face of the earth,declares theLord.
1 : 4 I will stretch out my hand against Judahand against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem;and I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baaland the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests,
1 : 5 those who bow down on the roofsto the host of the heavens,those who bow down and swear to theLordand yet swear byMilcom,
1 : 6 those who have turned back from following theLord,who do not seek theLordor inquire of him.
1 : 7 Be silent before the LordGod!Forthe day of theLordis near;theLordhas prepared a sacrificeandconsecrated his guests.
1 : 8 And on the day of theLord's sacrifice&emdash;I will punish the officials and the king's sonsandall who array themselves in foreign attire.
1 : 9 On that day I will punisheveryonewho leaps over the threshold,and those who fill their master'shousewith violence and fraud.
1 : 10 On that day,declares theLord,a cry will be heard fromthe Fish Gate,a wail fromthe Second Quarter,a loud crash from the hills.
1 : 11 Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar!For all the tradersare no more;all who weigh out silver are cut off.
1 : 12 At that timeI will search Jerusalem with lamps,and I will punish the menwho are complacent,those who say in their hearts,TheLordwill not do good,nor will he do ill.
1 : 13 Their goods shall beplundered,and their houses laid waste.Though they build houses,they shall not inhabit them;though they plant vineyards,they shall not drink wine from them.
1 : 14 The great day of theLordis near,near and hastening fast;the sound of the day of theLordis bitter;the mighty man cries aloud there.
1 : 15 A day of wrath is that day,a day of distress and anguish,a day ofruin and devastation,a day of darkness and gloom,a day of clouds and thick darkness,
1 : 16 a day of trumpet blast and battle cryagainst the fortified citiesand against the lofty battlements.
1 : 17 I will bring distress on mankind,so that they shall walklike the blind,because they have sinned against theLord;their blood shall be poured out like dust,and their fleshlike dung.
1 : 18 Neither their silver nor their goldshall be able to deliver themon the day of the wrath of theLord.In the fire of his jealousy,all the earth shall be consumed;for a full and sudden endhe will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.
